36+ Wedding Horror Stories That Take the Cake

We’ve all daydreamed about our perfect weddings—the three-tier cake, the epic dance-off, and of course, all our friends and family being there to celebrate. But what they don’t tell you is that behind every fairytale wedding, there’s a much crazier tale waiting to be told.

From outrageous mothers-in-law and diva brides to a whole lot of chaos and comedy, weddings really are a drama fest. We’re about to spill the bubbly on wedding stories that’ll have you rolling in the aisles.

‘Til Death Do Us Part

We all know that marriage means promising to be together for eternity, but this couple took their wedding vows a little too seriously. They obviously had some very specific predictions about the toll that marriage would take on their well-being.

We’re definitely glad we didn’t get an invite to this tattoo fest/wedding. At least the morgue attendant will get a laugh.

Love at First Flight

Some people dream about the perfect proposal for years before it happens. All that anticipation can sometimes mean that the reality, when it finally comes around, is a bit of a letdown.

This guy obviously thought that proposing in front of an airplane would be fitting and romantic, but his fiancee had other ideas. At least she was satisfied with the do-over. We have to agree with the creatively-worded comment below.

Start of Something New

Themed weddings are becoming more and more popular, and people can go a bit overboard when it comes to committing to the theme. We all know at least one adult keen to bring the magic of Disney to their special day.

This person was desperate for their High School Musical wedding to be as authentic as possible, even down to the guest list. We wonder if any of the HSM crew actually turned up.

Exposure Therapy

There are always people out there looking to get things for free, and who don’t care that they’re taking advantage of the time and talents of others. This couple obviously wants a wedding that’s beyond their budget, and they’ve come up with an innovative way to get what they want.

We can’t help but think that no one replied to this ad, let alone someone with eight years of experience. Some things in life are not free and weddings are one of them.

This Takes the Cake

From not providing an open bar, to having a DIY wedding, there are many ways that couples can choose to save money on their special day. After all, not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on one party.

However, this couple cheaped out in the most miserly way possible. Charging your guests per slice of cake is one thing, but checking CCTV to check how many pieces they ate is on a whole new level of penny-pinching. We can’t help but wonder what they’re going to spend that £3.66 on.

The Old Ball and Chain

Seeing the same old wedding traditions can get a little old and tired, so we can understand why people might want to mix things up for a more memorable occasion.

But this person has described some alternative rituals that sound like they’d be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Having the bride kiss every man in the room on the day she ties the knot doesn’t sound like the best way to kick off a marriage. We’ll stick to the traditions, thank you very much.

Photo Bomber

Wedding photos are a big deal and most people want these mementos of their special day to be full of loved ones, happiness, and magical moments. However, some newlyweds can get a little fussy when it comes to their wedding photos.

This couple was unhappy with one person in particular who made a prominent appearance in their photos even though she promised she wouldn’t. We think removing her altogether is a little harsh, but to be fair to them, the reverend’s wife could have at least put on a smile.

It’s Black and White

Everyone knows that there are certain unwritten rules when it comes to how to behave as a wedding guest. Arrive on time, don’t bring a date if you didn’t get a plus-one, don’t text the bride and groom asking for directions, and don’t, whatever you do, wear white.

Unfortunately, one of the guests at this bride’s wedding didn’t get the memo. We think it’s cute that she’s checking with her Facebook friends whether it’s reasonable to be annoyed or not. Spoiler alert: it is.

Fashion Faux Pas

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that the right to wear white to a wedding is reserved for the bride and the bride only. But some people are determined to wear their favorite ivory gown, despite the social taboo.

This guest not only decided to wear white, but she decided to wear what can only be described as a white wedding dress, complete with lace and a train. Honestly, we’re surprised she didn’t throw on a veil as well.

Stealing Thunder

Every good wedding guest knows that you shouldn’t do anything to detract attention from the bride and groom. No fights, no causing scenes, no announcing pregnancies, and definitely no proposals.

This guy’s red flag was proposing to his girlfriend on the dance floor at his cousin’s wedding. The icing on the cake? He wasn’t even invited. We’re not surprised to hear that he’s getting a divorce.

Bridezilla

Wedding gifts can often be a thorny issue. It’s hard to know how much money you’re expected to spend and wedding gift lists full of practical items can sometimes feel impersonal. However, this bride has no qualms about setting the minimum spend for gifts.

We have a feeling that this is going to be a very small wedding if that’s the way she’s inviting all her guests.

That’s Cold

If you don’t get a wedding planner, you usually have to rely on friends and family to help you plan your big day. A lot of work goes into planning a wedding, and you’re lucky if your loved ones are willing to pitch in.

Sadly, this bride had the audacity to accept help from a friend and then uninvite her just weeks before the wedding. The helpful friend is definitely better off without this kind of toxic relationship in her life.

Bold Demands

Anyone who’s had a wedding will know that there is always a limit on how many guests you can invite. Venue capacity, fire safety rules, and catering costs mean that you have to make some tough choices about who doesn’t make the cut.

Asking to be invited to someone’s wedding is a bold move in itself, but this girl had the audacity to demand to be invited to the wedding of two people she’d never met in real life. Girl, we wish we had your confidence, but that’s just nuts.

Monster-in-Law

We all know the stereotype about mother-in-laws causing chaos at weddings. It can be hard for mothers to accept that their precious sons are getting married and so they have been known to act up and cause drama.

This couple has come up with the perfect distraction for a dramatic MIL. We feel like this could be the start of a great movie and we’re desperate to know whether the plan worked. Maybe the mother-in-law will be getting married next.

Wet Blanket

We’re all for puns and rhymes when it comes to celebrations so we can see what this bride was going for. Unfortunately, that’s where our sympathy stops.

Asking your guests to sit on blankets on the grass is not a great move and we have a feeling there’ll be some disgruntled guests with sore backs after this al fresco ceremony. Spring for some cushions, at the very least.

Break the Mold

With countless baking accounts on social media and baking shows on Netflix, elaborate wedding cakes are more popular than ever. Aside from the classic fruit cake with white icing, there are plenty of ways to jazz up your dessert centerpiece.

This wedding cake is definitely unusual and unconventional, but definitely not in a good way. Looking like it’s covered in mold is not exactly what we’d call appetizing.

Made of Honor

This bride was working hard to get everything ready for her big day, picking out table linens, when she got a text from her sister saying that she’d spotted her fiancé kissing her maid of honor at the wedding venue. She even sent a picture to prove it.

The bride was confused as her maid of honor was in Paris. It wasn’t until after the wedding had been called off and she’d broken up with her fiancé that she found out that her sister had created a deep fake image out of jealousy and intentionally ruined her life.

Like Pulling Teeth

This girl was invited to a wedding where the couple had only ever chatted online but never met in real life. The first time they saw each other was supposed to be at the altar.

When the bride started walking down the aisle, she greeted the guests with a wide grin, revealing a set of very large and crooked teeth. The groom, a dental surgery student, was initially horrified, but then he realized he’d found the perfect model for his surgery practice. A year into the marriage and she was sporting a perfect set of pearly whites.

Melissa’s Mystery

The worst part of any wedding is always the huge amount of admin and chasing people for answers right up until the big day. When this woman thought her friends were being rude by not responding her RSVP requests.

When it came time for the ceremony, Melissa wanted it to go ahead whether the guests would show, or not. But when she got to the altar, she saw Seth standing there, and all 100 guests, and they looked like they’d all seen a ghost. They sat in silence the entire ceremony, and never explained once why they never showed up.

Last-Minute Jitters

Everyone knows that the lead up to a wedding is often almost more stress-inducing than the actual wedding itself. And that pre-wedding stress only multiplies ten-fold if one party discovers something about their spouse-to-be right before the big day.

This woman found something out about her fiance at the last possible minute, and she chose to call him out instead of waiting until after they tied the knot. That’s going to be one awkward ceremony.

Nuptial Nightmare

This bride recalled a true nightmare she had when her wedding party decided it would be funny to lock her in a closet and leave her there a few hours before her wedding. Unfortunately, they didn’t realize she became trapped by falling mats and they didn’t hear her screams.

If only they’d opened the door for five minutes to check on her, they’d have realized she had fallen asleep on top of the mats and dreamed they were falling on top of her. They’d have been able to wake her up from her nightmare, rather than waiting to interrupt her lie-in until the groom was already waiting at the altar.

Too Close for Comfort

This bride’s mom was trying to compete with her ex-husband by booking hotel suites in the same hotel that he had gifted his daughter for the wedding night.

The only problem was that her mom had booked the suite next door to the bridal suite and the walls were super thin. It’s not hard to understand why sharing a wall with her mom on her wedding night was not what she had in mind. Let’s hope the hotel was able to change their booking, otherwise it’s going to be pretty awkward the next morning.

Behind the Mask

The pandemic really put a spanner in the works when it came to wedding celebrations. From social distancing and isolation requirements to unintentional super-spreader events, couples getting married during COVID-19 faced a lot of problems.

Then there was the thorny issue of masks. Some people insisted on wearing one at all times, while others flat-out refused. Let’s hope this guest and bride were able to work something out so no one had to miss the big day.

Honey Trap

We agree that it’s fine to ask for donations rather than gifts for your wedding. If you have everything you need, then funds for travel are a great way for people to contribute to your newlywed life.

But asking people who aren’t even coming to your wedding for money. Now that’s just not classy. We have to assume that “everyone who isn’t able to join” translates as “everyone who wasn’t invited”. Yikes.

Hairy Moment

Being asked to be a bridesmaid can be both a blessing and a curse. Yes, it’s fun to be in the wedding and support your friend on their special day, but on the other hand, you might be forced to spend a fortune on a bachelorette party and wear an unflattering dress you’d never normally choose in front of hundreds of people and a videographer.

Or, like this girl, you might asked to completely change your hair just for the photos. Now that’s one we haven’t heard before.

Chart a Course

There are lots of things to think about when it comes to planning a wedding. From outfits to music to the seating arrangements, couples have to do a lot of juggling to make sure everything is perfect.

This couple decided that their seating chart was the perfect opportunity to bamboozle their guests. We hope the bubbly hadn’t been flowing before everyone found their places because otherwise, we’re not sure anyone would have made it to their seats.

Bridesmaid Wars

Brides often have some very particular ideas about their bridal party and how they should behave. Whether it’s the dresses they wear or how they do their hair, some brides start to think they can control everything their bridesmaids do.

However, before now, we’ve never heard of a bride accusing one of her bridesmaids of getting pregnant to get out of the wedding. In short, the answer to her question is yes, yes you are overreacting, now get over it and congratulate your friend on her happy news.

Cold Shoulder

Some brides are keen for all their bridesmaids to dress alike, style their hair the same, and not detract any attention away from her, the center of attention.

We understand that any bride wants to stand out, but policing their bodies and choices is taking things a little far. This bride couldn’t support her sister’s self-expression and was just worried that her new tattoo wouldn’t match the fairytale vibe of her wedding. We say embrace individuality—it will only make your photos all the more interesting.

Made the Cut

It’s true that when people drop out of your wedding, you have spots open to invite guests who didn’t make the cut the first time around. But there are definitely classier ways of doing it than this.

We happen to know this message was sent late on Thursday before the wedding on Saturday. At that point, it’s probably more polite just not to invite anyone to fill the spot than to give two days’ notice. But that’s just our opinion.

It’s All About Her

Traditionally, the wedding is more about the bride than the groom. She’s usually the one who’s been dreaming of this day for longer, she’s more involved in the planning and she gets to walk down the aisle last to make the grandest entrance.

However, it’s normally an unspoken truth. Emilie and Jon, decided to make it obvious whose day it really was with this unconventional wedding sign. We have to wonder whether anyone would notice if the groom forgot to turn up.

Foul Mouth

It’s always good to be direct with people and not beat about the bush too much. But this couple has taken things a bit too far with this expletive-laden and downright insulting wedding invitation.

We notice that the only section where they haven’t used curse words is the one where they’re asking people for money. We can see right through that little plot. Not cool.

Keeping it in the Family

It’s an unfortunate truth that sometimes our exes end up hanging around in our lives for longer than we’d like them to. It’s hard to forget the pain of someone cheating when they’ve ended up with your best friend or family member.

This girl’s aunt wants her to forget about the lying and backstabbing and just be happy for her ex and her cousin. While we agree that family is important, watching this particular ceremony might leave a sour taste in her mouth.

Friendship Breakup

Weddings can be a tense time, with emotions running high, lots of expectations, and family drama. Sometimes a wedding is all it takes to push relationships to the brink.

For these friends, declining a wedding invitation was just too much and the bride made a decisive move: the un-invitation. Friendships can naturally run their course, and in this case, we don’t have much hope for a reconciliation.

Dress Code

Don’t get us started on wedding dress codes. From black tie to color schemes and costume changes, many couples get very enthusiastic when it comes to choosing their wedding outfits. Others? Not so much.

This guy obviously didn’t fancy putting on a suit for the big day and it seems like his bride was okay with that. We get wanting to be comfortable, but did he really have to wear the Crocs?

Eco Warriors

In this day and age, there’s really no need to send out paper invitations (except to a few oldies who don’t use email). All wedmin can be done online and save a whole lot of time, money, and the world’s precious resources.

The couple who sent out this Save the Date obviously had their hearts in the right place, but they weren’t so smart when it came to execution. We applaud wanting to be more eco-friendly, but if that’s your goal, don’t fill the envelope with glittering microplastics that take hundreds of years to decompose.

Uber Mad

We get it—the price of weddings these days is astronomical and we can understand why couples might want to save some money here and there.

However, getting an Uber pool to take you to your wedding is next-level stingy, and you definitely have no right to get mad at the other passengers. Come on guys, you don’t have to get a limo but at least spring for an Uber Comfort.

Kids Not Welcome

We can understand why the invite list can be a thorny issue, particularly when it comes to exes who might still be in your life or close to your family. If one partner feels uncomfortable and the other one can’t understand, it can be hard to come to an agreement.

But not wanting to invite the kids of an ex-girlfriend feels like a whole separate issue. If this woman is jealous of 15-year-old teens, she probably needs to ask herself why. We hope they managed to work things out.

Don’t Tell the Groom

Wanting to have bridesmaids and groomsmen at your wedding comes down to each individual choice. Some people love having their crew involved in the big day, while others prefer to keep things simple.

However, if your husband-to-be has said that he doesn’t want groomsmen “at ALL”, then we’re not sure it’s the best idea to surprise him with them on the day. We’d love to hear how it went down.

One Crucial Detail

“How We Met” stories are normally cute and romantic and we can understand why couples would want to share them on their wedding websites. It’s always fun to hear a marriage origin story.

But if you got together in a scandalous way where others got hurt, it’s best to keep it on the DL. Unfortunately, this couple decided to credit the person who introduced them, failing to mention that they were actually cheating on her. Now we understand why she’s her “former best friend”.

Is This Fur Real?

Brides usually have a lot to keep track of. Even though guests know they shouldn’t pester the couple when they have a million other things to think about, some of them just can’t help it.

We’ve heard a lot of crazy guest demands, but we’ve never heard this one before. Assuming you can bring your cats to the wedding is next-level nutty, and props to this bride for being so sweet about it. Girl, you’re not being a bridezilla just because felines aren’t on the guest list.

Menu Planning

We get it—catering is one of the biggest expenses that you incur when paying for a wedding so it’s perfectly understandable to want to save money. However, when guests are traveling from far and wide to come and celebrate with you, the decent thing is to provide them with a proper meal.

We don’t know about you but we need a whole lot more fuel than charcuterie and ice cream to dance the night away. And three drinks and no carbs? Sounds like a recipe for a messy night to us.

Too Much Information

Watching someone you’ve always had a crush on get married can be a painful experience. Your window of opportunity is rapidly closing and you might feel frustrated that you missed your chance.

Of course, you’re not obliged to go to the wedding, but you’re also not obliged to tell the person the reason why. This guy threw caution to the wind and revealed his amorous feelings before he’d even been invited to the wedding. Guess it’s better than running in and shouting “I object!”

Bouquet Blunder

Everyone knows that on no account should you ever stage a dramatic proposal at someone else’s wedding. It’s stealing the limelight, it’s not classy and it’s just plain bad manners. Unfortunately, this mother-in-law didn’t get the memo.

Let’s hope that the son had the good sense to propose in the month preceding the wedding, otherwise, we’re sensing some family drama might be brewing.

Cheater of Honor

Getting cold feet is not unusual and no one should see a few pre-marriage jitters as a sign that you shouldn’t get married. Committing to someone for the rest of your life is a big deal so it’s natural to get a little nervous.

Kissing your best friend, however, is a bit more of a red flag. This woman needs to figure out her feelings for her “Bestie of Honor” before getting married, and maybe stop cheating on her fiancee and posting on the internet about it. Just a thought.

Ice Queen

When choosing what to wear to a wedding, it’s a good idea to check the dress code, check the color scheme, and make sure your outfit is comfortable enough to eat and dance in. Other than that, you’re free to pick a favorite dress from your closet or treat yourself to a new one.

For some reason, this close friend of the bride decided that a sparkling silver white gown and a white fur stole was the perfect look for her friend’s special day. We’re guessing they’re not so close anymore after this outrageous faux pas.

Be Yourself

There are some men out there who really hate being trussed up in suits and that’s fair. Tuxedos are expensive, uncomfortable, and oh-so-formal and some guys don’t want to spend the happiest day of their lives dressed like a waiter.

This guy decided to wear his favorite comfy clothes, even though his bride had opted for a more traditional look. We hope she was okay with it. We’re also wondering why they’re cutting the wedding cake with a sword, but that’s another story.

No Returns

If you decide to do a DIY wedding, chances are that your house is full of origami swans, mason jars, and votives with no place to go. It may save you money but it definitely doesn’t save you space.

Rather than selling these wedding items, this bride has come up with another way to get rid of them. Returning used stuff to the seller is definitely a bad move and we hope she followed the advice of these comments and returned this plan to where it came from.

Say a Little Prayer

It’s always a good idea to wait to receive an invitation rather than asking to be invited to a wedding. It saves any awkwardness and is just the polite thing to do.

This person decided she didn’t mind making everyone uncomfortable, and when she got rejected, she started lashing out. We think she should start praying for some better manners…

Suit Up

Most women have spent hours looking for the perfect dress for a wedding, only to turn up and see that someone else is wearing the same or a very similar one, and they’re wearing it better. It’s not good for self-esteem, especially after a few drinks.

Men, on the other hand, can turn up dressed like Matrix clones and take their jackets and ties off straight after the ceremony. Ahh, just another one of the injustices women face.

Flower Boy

Groomsmen are known for throwing epic bachelor parties, playing pranks on each other, and making the most outrageous speeches. Normally, this is all in good fun, but this groomsman took things a little too far.

Involving the bride in any kind of prank the night before her wedding is a bad move, but to make her think she was being jilted is beyond the pale. We hope they got him back, big time.

Mane Attraction

According to some people, children and weddings don’t mix. For others, it’s important to have all loved ones in attendance, no matter whether they’re still in diapers or not. If you do choose to invite kids to your wedding, you have to be prepared to accept a certain amount of chaos.

If you ask us, wedding photos can only be improved by the presence of a kid in an adorable costume. This bride needs to embrace this little lion and just enjoy her day.
