Five dogs—a mother and her four puppies—were finally saved after being stuck in a car for days while people fled a huge blaze.
Last week, a huge, destructive Park Fire hit Northern California. It is thought that someone set it on purpose. The fire has grown to more than 380,000 acres, making it the fifth biggest in California history.
A lot of people in four counties had to leave their homes. One person from Butte County was trying to get out of a remote area when their truck broke down. They had to leave their dogs, two adult rottweilers and their four pups, behind in the truck.
The dogs were stuck in the truck for days because of the flames and no one could get to them. But once it was safe, two people from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue went straight to get the dogs.
A news statement from the department says that pilot Conner Smith and BCSO member Trevor Skaggs flew into the disaster-stricken area. Trevor then ran for 1.5 miles to find the dog.
Bad news: the adult male dog who was the puppies’ father had died. The puppies and their mother, however, were still alive.
Trevor gave the dogs water and protein bar bites because they were thirsty and tired. Then he led them back to the helicopter. The pilot flew them to Chico Airport, where members of the North Valley Animal Disaster Group took care of them.
What a terrible fire! So far, 192 buildings have been destroyed, and many people have been forced to leave their homes, worried that they will never have a place to call home again.
But the fact that these dogs were saved and are likely to live is a sign of hope and good news in the middle of this disaster.
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office wrote, “These past few days have been terrible for our community, and we are thankful to be able to share this amazing story.”
The fire is now 14% contained, and the person who is thought to have started it has been caught. Firefighters and other rescue workers are still working hard to put out the fire and help the people who were hurt.
It’s amazing that these puppies and their mother made it through days of being stuck. Thank you to everyone who went out to save them.
