Sunscreen Contouring

Acquiring makeup skills has become more convenient than ever before. In fact, all you need to do is a simple online search for the desired appearance, and you will be met with countless tutorials to guide you.

A suggestion that doesn’t involve wearing makeup is to try sunscreen contouring. This beauty technique involves applying varying degrees of sunscreen on your face to achieve a contoured tan. However, the video that popularized this trend received backlash for not advocating for complete sun protection while out in the sun during the summer.

Don’t File Your Teeth

Many of us have taken moments to gaze at our reflections in the mirror, specifically focusing on our teeth. In fact, you may even have a desire for them to appear differently in certain respects.

There are specific methods that should not be used when attempting to change teeth. In most cases, it is advisable to entrust such decisions to a knowledgeable dentist. Resorting to using a nail file to file down teeth is not a recommended solution. Nevertheless, despite this, some people still attempted it.

Just a Little Honey

Initially, the idea of tasting a frozen honey morsel doesn’t seem too unpleasant. However, the prospect of consuming a whole water bottle filled with it seems less enticing.

However, it wasn’t the taste of this unfortunate snack that made the frozen honey trend so unfavorable. Individuals who consumed large quantities of honey experienced a distressing outcome. It didn’t take much time for the excessively sugary treat to result in stomach discomfort and urgent trips to the restroom.

Not a Great Challenge

Converting! Wait…

Soon after, others began replicating the act, leading to the hashtag “#peeyourpantschallenge” gaining nearly four million views on the platform before eventually fading away from popularity, to our relief. We definitely won’t feel any regret for its absence.

Full Facial Waxes

Many individuals opt to remove their hair through waxing. This can be a time-saving option compared to frequent shaving. However, complete facial waxing was often a dependable choice for those seeking a surprising outcome.

The sole issue was that, once more, this was a fad that carried more danger than potential rewards. It almost goes without saying that applying hot wax to your face could have dreadful consequences.

Taking From TV

Many trends that people remembered from the ’90s and early 2000s emerged during the year. However, opinions on these trends varied, with some being more popular than others.

However, during this resurgence of fashion trends, individuals were not particularly enthusiastic about witnessing attire that resembled those seen in movies like Twilight and other 2000s popular media. The criticisms surrounding it were not necessarily that it was poor, but rather that it was not a particularly thrilling trend to adhere to for an extended period of time.

Patchwork Denim

Last year, we witnessed an increase in the prevalence of denim, which reflected the fashion trends of the ’90s and early 2000s. This phenomenon had positive aspects, as it resulted in the creation of remarkable outfits.

However, not everyone was thrilled to witness the resurgence of trends like patchwork denim. Although it can be seen as a striking fashion choice by some, there are those who believe that the final outcome appears disorganized or simply represents a past trend they do not long for.

Micro Bags

Including a mini bag as part of one’s ensemble can bring joy and excitement. We observed famous individuals such as Lizzo embracing this trend by incorporating extremely tiny bags as fashionable accessories.

While they were enjoyable, there were objections to the fact that they significantly lacked the practical functionality of a purse. Ultimately, as an accessory for an outfit, it is relatively pointless and wouldn’t be helpful if you were already wearing clothing without pockets.

Dangerous Gender Reveal Parties

Moving away from the realm of fashion, this is a pattern that has been developing over a period of time. The idea is straightforward: parents are increasingly attempting more extravagant and attention-grabbing activities to unveil the gender of their baby.

What started as all fun and games has gotten out of hand quickly. After one gender reveal led to a devastating wildfire in 2020, people started to call for an end to the excessive trend that had become more dangerous over time.

Jeans Above the Ankle

With so many denim styles popular lately, it’s no surprise that we have a few different popular styles of jeans to choose from. What’s a denim collection without a good pair of jeans?

Honestly, the style itself looked good! Still, a few people had complaints about the style simply because they missed their ankle coverage. We’re guessing this is one trend that won’t disappear overnight but that’s why it’s good to have plenty of options for jeans styles available.

Mixed Emotions on Mullets

The interesting thing about seeing old trends come back around is figuring out which ones still remain as controversial as when they fell out of style.

One haircut that rose from the grave recently is the mullet. This is another option that many people love and have even pulled off but there are definitely some dissenters against the trend’s return as well. As for the mullet, we’ll have to see if it sticks around or falls to the wayside.

No Licking!

There are some trends that are bad enough to leave people rolling their eyes. Then, there are some trends that get banned shortly after they’ve started. That’s what happened on TikTok with the term “devious lick” and some of its equivalents.

The trend featured students stealing or vandalizing items they found at school. The problem led to formal charges, as well as the ban, but at least it also brought about wholesome “angelic yields” as a counter-trend — where TikTokers return goods stolen from their school bathrooms.

The Milk Crate Challenge

It seems pretty frequent that the internet manages to make something fun out of nearly nothing. Still, sometimes the results can get a little risky. The milk crate challenge was simple enough.

The challenge had TikTok users trying to scale structures made out of stacks of plastic milk crates. Unsurprisingly, the catch was that they weren’t particularly sturdy, making failing the challenge pretty painful. It wasn’t long before people were begging for the trend to fall out before more people tried the dangerous stunt.

A Take on Side Hustles

Over the last few years, it’s been easier than ever to make a profit off of your hobbies. If you’re really good at something, someone might have even suggested it already.

When it came to trends not to take into the new year, some people think the concept of turning everything into a side hustle isn’t the answer. They complained that some hobbies should be just that. That is, the complaints are mainly aimed at the obligation of a side hustle, not the bare notion of it.

Cowboy Boots

This is another controversial choice that has worked its way into fashion trends lately. After all, there have been some mixed emotions on the return of cowboy boots.

However, it isn’t an all-around bad trend. Still, some people think that if nothing else, they’re going to be selective about what they pair cowboy boots with. We suppose that they are a particular aesthetic that might not work with every outfit out there.

Take as Intended

There are some items that should never be involved in an internet challenge. Yet, as the internet has proven… again and again, that doesn’t always mean no one will try it.

Still, we have to wonder if there’s any end to bad ideas like the Benadryl Challenge. This challenge involved taking more Benadryl than advised. Needless to say, it was a dangerous proposition and even the FDA sent out a warning about this trend.

Low-Rise Jeans

As we’ve said, it’s a good thing that there are a few different types of jeans in style. After all, not everyone wants the same look.

Still, there are plenty of people who are ready to trade in their low-rise jeans for a pair with a higher waist. It’s a trend that pops up every now and again, and for some people, it really works. For others, the high-waisted trend is more their preference.

Worst Way to Eat Cereal

Enjoying a bowl of cereal in the morning can be a great way to start the day. That is, unless you’re eating cereal as this challenge calls for.

The trend that we’re happy to leave behind had users eating cereal using another person’s mouth as a bowl. Aside from inducing some gags in the users who saw the trend, it also seems like a bit of a choking hazard. From now on, let’s stick to the dishware.

DIY Fangs

As Halloween rolled around this year, we had the chance to see a trend where people showed off their costumes for the holiday. Some even came in with handy tips!

This included ways to make sure that those vampire fangs you bought stayed on all night. Unfortunately, if you jumped on the trend around the time that some people made the ill-fated decision to use superglue or nail glue to keep the fangs in place, it makes for a dangerously lasting costume.

Playing Pranks

This is a trend that existed on YouTube a long time before the trend extended onto TikTok as well. Many are claiming that it’s a trend that we should leave behind this year.

The matter at hand is playing pranks on other people. Specifically, there’s an argument against playing mean pranks on loved ones and especially strangers. To many, it comes across simply as mean without much humor and they aren’t a fan of it moving into the new year.

Tiny Sunglasses

This is another trend that some people weren’t fans of due to their utility. In the new year, some people are really ready to leave behind their tiny sunglasses.

The arguments against them are, for one, that they’re due to fall out of fashion. On the other hand, some just wonder why they’d opt for sunglasses with tiny lenses rather than the fuller protection of larger lenses that you aren’t as likely to just look overtop of.

Double Denim

At this point, it’s easy to see that not every denim trend that graced our social media feeds this year was well-received. Another trend that not everyone is interested in is the concept of double denim.

This usually consists of a pair of jeans and a denim top or jacket to finish it off. It’s been in style before but some people think it’ll fall off again this year. Still, it doesn’t quite seem like something everyone is willing to give up.

Sneaker Wedges

Sneaker wedges are another trend that has left many people wondering if every fashion trend that sacrifices utility is a good idea.

Sneaker wedges have the design of standard sneakers but with a wedge heel for some extra height. They work well if you like chunky sneakers that’ll give you a boost but it removes almost all of the hope of using those sneakers as athletic wear. Some just don’t think they look all that great either.

Biker Shorts

If nothing else, biker shorts are practical. They’re made as athletic wear and the lycra material makes that clear. They’ve become fairly popular.

Not everyone is as behind these lycra shorts as when the trend first cropped up, though. While there is still plenty of athletic wear that’s sure to stay in style as time goes on, it seems like the bike shorts are fated to take a break for a while.

Blackout Challenge

There are some things that are usually limited to concerning circumstances. Technically speaking, these circumstances had a lot of people concerned. The trend in question here is the blackout challenge, sometimes referred to as the fainting game.

In it, users try to hold their breath or even shake their heads back and forth to the point of passing out. The dangerous experience is highly ill-advised and has even resulted in some fatal circumstances among young participants.

An Interesting Choice of Primer

There have been a lot of beauty hacks introduced via TikTok tutorials. Some were expected tricks while others left us scratching our heads wondering how this came to be.

While some reported that the trend worked, we’re not so sure that Durex is usually who we turn to when we need a primer. It does have propylene glycol that makes for a smooth finish but we’re not so sure it’s worth the apparently sticky results.

Bucket Hats

One particularly unexpected trend from the 1990s that came back in 2020 was the use of bucket hats as an accessory. The retro look might not be here to say, however.

The casual look that these hats give off might not be among the more lasting trends as of late. While hats themselves are still great accessories for almost any outfit, fewer and fewer people are reaching for their bucket hats to finish off their looks.

The Return of Uggs

There are some trends that were controversial even during their original debut. It seems like they can stay controversial when they’re reintroduced.

That about sums up the mixed feelings around the reintroduction of Uggs. However, many think that the best thing to do is to leave them in the past. They’ve been docked not only for the sake of being Uggs but not always providing the same protection as a winter shoe despite their appearances.

Straw Bags

This is an example of something that people are tired of both for their looks and functionality. Honestly, we can see where the controversy comes from with straw bags.

On the more shallow side, some people are ready to say goodbye to these wicker-like bags purely for their looks. Others complain that since straw isn’t quite as flexible as a purse made out of cloth, they aren’t quite as useful when it comes to serious storage either.

Upside Down Bikini Tops

Sometimes, a new trend doesn’t mean buying something new. It can just mean wearing something you already have in a new way. That’s what happened to bikini tops as people started flipping them around and wearing the tops upside down.

The trend is pretty popular, especially when the weather is warm for the revamped look. Still, there are some who find the trend didn’t quite offer the security they were hoping for.

Scarf Shirts

A scarf shirt is another example of something that doesn’t necessarily look bad. Yet, some are still sick of the trend.

Much like the concept of an upside-down bikini, some found that the look wasn’t worth how much trouble they had keeping the top in place throughout the day. All in all, the complaints mostly centered around looking for something with a great look that’ll stay in place as you go about your day.

Logos on Everything

This is another example of a trend that people have seen for a while. It’s no surprise we’re seeing it again given the ’90s revival in fashion. There are plenty of people who are sick of seeing huge logos on clothing and accessories.

While some are happy to represent the brand they love, others find the practice tacky and unnecessary, putting more focus on the company than the individuality of one’s fashion sense. Only time will tell which opinion on this trend prevails.

Throwing on Crocs

Crocs have been in and out of style over the years. However, that doesn’t mean that they haven’t been highly criticized since their release. So, it’s no surprise that as 2020 closes its doors, people are begging to leave crocs in the past.

Granted, they do have the benefit of being comfortable but when it comes to trends with skyrocketing popularity, they aren’t the most common choice. Those calling an end to this trend argue that comfort just isn’t worth it.

Just Take a Bite

From time to time, we’ve probably all wondered if there was a more efficient way to enjoy our favorite foods. Still, there are some measures that are just too far.

In a cartoonish feat, users put a cob of corn on a drill to try and use the spinning motion to eat faster. In fact, the trend even got Jason Derulo on board who left the video with a chipped tooth and probably a couple of regrets.

Best Left to the Professionals

There are some trends that seem like great ideas but aren’t the best DIY option. Sometimes, it’s just better to get a professional involved.

For instance, one Big Brother Australia star ended up with some less-than-exciting results when she tried out some DIY acupuncture she saw on TikTok. Tilly Whitfield shared their story and warned others against blindly trying out DIY beauty trends — especially ones that most people leave to the professionals.

Dry Scooping

It seems like fitness trends are a dime a dozen anymore. The bad news is that there have been some truly dangerous trends here as well. This included the dry scooping trend that had TikTok users eating a scoop of a pre-workout mix without mixing it with water.

The only problem is that pre-workout mixes are full of caffeine and it can turn out potentially dangerous, including one influencer who had a heart attack after trying the trend.

Not in the Outlet

It seems like basic knowledge that you shouldn’t put metal from anything other than a plug into an outlet. That didn’t stop people from trying to slide a penny behind a plugged-in charger.

The prank even sparked an advisory from the Massachusetts Fire Marshall. In an advisory, Marshall Peter J. Ostroskey warns that doing this trend can result in “sparks, electrical system damage, and in some cases, fire.” Seems like a good trend to leave behind and never bring back.

Inverted Filters

When TikTok introduced their inverted filter, plenty of people flocked to try it. Not everyone liked what they saw, though, prompting many to call for the filter to stay in the past.

Conceptually, the filter flips or inverts your features to show what you might look like to someone else. The only problem was it quickly highlighted the parts of people’s faces that weren’t symmetrical and the filter ended up giving many feelings of self-consciousness rather than having fun with a new filter.

Recording Strangers

It’s very common knowledge for almost everyone to have an online presence. Still, you should have the option to opt out of it if you want.

That’s why many people are saying that in the new year, maybe it’s time to finally give up recording strangers for online videos — especially without their permission or knowledge. While the reactions might entertain at times, many say it isn’t worth bothering others who may not want to be involved in the content.

Skullbreaker Challenge

We’re not quite sure what led to this trend cropping up on TikTok. The challenge includes three people and has the apt name “skullbreaker challenge.”

The challenge involves two people tripping the third person, causing them to fall and — in many cases — hit their head. This trend led to a myriad of warnings, legal action, and even fatalities. So, we think it’s safe to say that this trend should be left behind for good.
