Even though he’s just 21 years old, Maridueña has already been in some important TV shows like Parenthood. And now he’s a big part of the main cast in Netflix’s Cobra Kai.
Jaime Reyes gets his hands on a strange scarab that turns into a powerful alien weapon. This leads him to become a superhero and face all sorts of new problems and obstacles along the way.

Barraza has been in some big movies like Thor and Rambo: Last Blood. And she has a lot of experience in Spanish-language films too. She’s joining this new Latin family in the DC movie. And they’re all set to bring excitement to the upcoming adventure.
Damían Alcázar – Alberto Reyes
Jaime Reyes’ dad, Alberto, will portray by experienced Mexican actor Damían Alcázar, marking his debut in the world of superhero movies.
Although he hasn’t been in a lot of big American films, some might recognize him as the actor who played Lord Sopespian in the 2008 movie The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.
Elpidia Carrillo – Rocio Reyes
Playing opposite Alberto Reyes is his wife and Jaime’s mother, Rocio Reyes, portrayed by the beloved Mexican actress Elpidia Carrillo.
Carrillo is most famous for her roles in both Predator movies, where she shared the screen with stars like Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, and Danny Glover in 1987 and 1990.
Susan Sarandon – Victoria Kord
One of the most prominent names in this movie is George Lopez, who is stepping into the world of comic book films for the first time. He plays Jaime’s uncle, Rudy.
You might recognize Lopez best from his career as a stand-up comedian and late-night TV host. Right now, he’s starring as a fictionalized version of himself in the show Lopez vs. Lopez, which he also helped create and produce.
Bruna Marquezine – Jenny Kord
In Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes is going to have a romantic interest named Jenny Kord, played by Bruna Marquezine. Jenny will probably have a connection to the villainous character Victoria Kord, portrayed by Susan Sarandon. It’s likely that Jenny is Victoria’s daughter, which will bring a lot of family drama as Jenny and Jaime’s relationship develops.
This movie marks one of Marquezine’s early ventures into major American films. She’s been well-known as a Brazilian actress and singer for many years, and she also had a role in the 2015 movie Breaking Through.
Belissa Escobedo – Milagro Reyes
Jaime’s lively sister, Milagro Reyes, will be portrayed by Belissa Escobedo. In the trailer, you can see her sharing jokes with her brother and providing him with strong emotional support.
Escobedo is quickly making a reputation for herself in Hollywood. She also had a significant role in the 2022 movie Hocus Pocus 2, where she starred alongside Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Harvey Guillén – Dr. Sanchez
In this movie, Harvey Guillen will step into a more villainous character as he portrays Dr. Sanchez. In photos, he’s shown guarding a cell where Jaime Reyes is held, and he’s wearing an intimidating expression.
Guillen is currently most recognized for his main role in FX’s show What We Do in the Shadows. He plays Guillermo, a vampire’s assistant turned bodyguard, in the TV version of Taika Waititi’s 2014 mockumentary-style comedy.
Blue Beetle is set to premiere in theaters on August 18th.
Who are the Villains?
While we’re not sure about the second Blue Beetle, Ted Kord’s role in the movie yet, a significant part will be played by Victoria Kord, portrayed by Susan Sarandon. She’s going to be a major opponent in the story.
Victoria Kord is a character specially made for the film, but she has also become a part of the comics as Ted’s older sister. We’re still in the dark about how exactly she’s connected to Ted, but it’s clear she’s determined to regain control of the Scarab. She wants to “change the world with the power of the Scarab,” but her real motives are uncertain. Sarandon has hinted that her character is somewhat like “the white military-industrial complex,” which adds an intriguing layer to the movie’s plot. We’ll have to wait and see how it all unfolds on screen.
A recent movie clip also hinted at OMAC. In the comics, OMAC was a made-up kind of cyborg where human bodies turn into cyborgs through a special nanotech virus. Because of the similarities to what the Blue Beetle scarab does to Jaime Reyes, there’s a possibility that there’s a link between the two. OMAC might have come from attempts to copy the Blue Beetle’s technology. Interestingly, OMACs were initially planned to be the bad guys in George Miller’s canceled Justice League Mortals movie back in 2009.
Blue Beetle finds itself in a unique position within the new DC Universe (DCU). Initially, it was supposed to be part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), but recent statements from DC Studios President James Gunn and Peter Safran suggest it’s now part of their universe. This movie will mark the first in the new DCU, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The idea seems to be that if the film is a success, it could easily fit into their broader plans for the new DCU.
The trailers drop a few hints about the larger DC world. They show buildings for LexCorp and Ace Chemicals. There’s also a direct mention of Batman, which was likely originally intended for the DCEU Batman, but now it could refer to the new Batman appearing in The Brave and the Bold.
Initially planned for an HBO Max release, the Blue Beetle project was moved to hit the big screen instead. The film is now scheduled to premiere in theaters on August 18, 2023.
Despite the ongoing WGA and SAG Strike, Warner Bros. doesn’t seem to be postponing the release of Blue Beetle. However, while the Strike is ongoing, the actors and writers won’t be able to promote the movie.
