Tornado Outbreak Leaves Havoc Across Central US On Memorial Day Weekend

A devastating storm system swept across the central United States, leaving at least eight people dead, including children. The severe weather caused widespread damage, power outages, and forced residents to take shelter. Five fatalities were reported in Cooke County, Texas, including three in one household, and two children remain missing. One person was killed in Benton County, Arkansas, and two people died, with 23 others injured, in northeast Oklahoma.

Multiple injuries were reported at a gas station in Northeast Texas, where 60-80 people sought shelter. Many vehicles were damaged or destroyed, leaving 40 people stranded. Homes, RV trailer parks, and gas stations were damaged or destroyed, and power lines were knocked out, leaving many without electricity. Boats and boat houses at Lake Ray Roberts Marina were also damaged.

The National Weather Service issued several tornado warnings for multiple North Texas cities, urging residents to seek shelter immediately as the storms moved east. More than 110 million people are under threat of large hail, damaging winds, and fierce tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center warned of “violent tornadoes, extreme hail, and corridors of widespread wind damage” as the storms continue to move east.

Safety Measures For Tornado Outbreak

Stay informed and monitor local news and weather reports for tornado warnings and watches. Develop a family emergency plan, including a safe room and escape routes, and prepare a safe room by identifying a basement or interior room on the lowest floor. Avoid traveling and stay away from windows and exterior walls during a tornado outbreak.

If a tornado occurs, seek shelter immediately in your designated safe room or a nearby building with a basement. Avoid windows and exterior walls, as they can shatter or collapse. Use a mattress, blanket, or pillows to protect yourself from debris, and crouch in a low position, such as a bathtub or other low-lying area, with your head and neck covered.

After the storm passes, wait for the all-clear from authorities before exiting your safe room. Be cautious of fallen power lines, sharp debris, and contaminated water, and provide first aid to anyone who is injured. Document property damage with photos for insurance purposes. By prioritising safety and being prepared, you can minimise the impact of a tornado outbreak.
