The Society of London Theatre has revealed the winners of this year’s 2024 Olivier Awards with Mastercard. The winners were announced at a star-studded ceremony at London’s Royal Albert Hall, hosted by Hannah Waddingham.

At the 2023 Olivier Awards in Royal Albert Hall, My Neighbour Totoro, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Prima Facie won big. Some other winners were Jack and the Beanstalk and Hey Duggee: The Live Theatre Show. People like Matt Cole and Kimie Nakano won for their great work in choreography and costume design. Actors Will Keen and Anjana Vasan got awards for their supporting roles. Arthur Darvill and Katie Brayben were named Best Actor and Actress in a Musical. Dame Arlene Phillips and Sir Derek Jacobi were given special awards for their amazing contributions to the arts.

The biggest winner styled in the main title on-screen as SUNSET BLVD. is a 1950 American black comedy film noir directed by Billy Wilder and co-written by Wilder and Charles Brackett. It was named after a major street that runs through Hollywood.

The film stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, a struggling screenwriter, and Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a former silent-film star who draws him into her deranged fantasy world, where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen. Erich von Stroheim plays Max von Mayerling, her devoted butler, and Nancy Olson, Jack Webb, Lloyd Gough, and Fred Clark appear in supporting roles. Director Cecil B. DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves, and the film includes cameo appearances by silent-film stars Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner, and Anna Q. Nilsson.

The biggest winner of the night 14 April 2024 was Sunset Boulevard with seven wins, including both Best Actor and Actress in a Musical for its leading duo Tom Francis and Nicole Scherzinger.

Praised by many critics when first released, Sunset Boulevard was nominated for 11 Academy Awards including nominations in all four acting categories, and won three. It is often ranked among the greatest movies ever made. As it was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the U.S. Library of Congress in 1989, Sunset Boulevard was included in the first group of films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. In 1998, it was ranked number 12 on the American Film Institute’s list of the 100 best American films of the 20th century, and in 2007, it was 16th on their 10th Anniversary list.

Jamie Lloyd won the Sir Peter Hall Award for Best Director and the show also won Best Musical Revival. Jack Knowles took home the White Light Award for Best Lighting Design; Alan Williams won the Outstanding Musical Contribution award for his musical supervision & musical direction and Adam Fisher won the D&B Audiotechnik Award for Best Sound Design.

Host Hannah Waddingham kicked off the ceremony with a stunning rendition of ‘Anything Goes’ from the musical of the same name, joined by musician Joe Stilgoe and the London Community Gospel Choir. Throughout the evening, there were performances from nominees like The Little Big Things, Next To Normal, and Hadestown, with Sunset Boulevard taking home the prize for Best Musical Revival.

Operation Mincemeat snagged the Mastercard Best New Musical award, showcasing the strength of London’s musical theatre scene. Jak Malone won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in Operation Mincemeat. Mark Gatiss and Sarah Snook clinched the coveted awards for Best Actor and Best Actress for their remarkable performances in The Motive And The Cue and The Picture Of Dorian Gray, respectively.

Amy Trigg won Best Supporting Actress in The Little Big Things, and Vanya won Best Revival. Arlene Phillips and James Cousins won for Guys & Dolls choreography. The First Shadow won for Best New Play and Set Design. Sleepova won for Outstanding Affiliate Theatre, and Innocence won Best New Opera. Isabela Coracy won for Dance, and La Ruta won for New Dance. Antonio Pappano won for Opera.

Dinosaur World Live won Best Family Show at the Olivier Awards. The ceremony honored Haydn Gwynne posthumously, with her children accepting the award for Best Supporting Actress on her behalf. The National Theatre closed the event with a special performance celebrating its 60th anniversary, featuring Joseph Fiennes and other talented actors. Eleanor Lloyd, President of SOLT, praised the talent showcased at the awards. Mastercard continued its partnership as the headline sponsor for the 14th consecutive year.
