Shiva’s Saga: Shiva’s Tale About Overcoming Fear, Finding Freedom, and a Home

Shiva’s story is a powerful testament to resilience and the transformative power of love.

Shiva’s life is a moving monument to resiliency and the transforming force of love. Concerned people came to Shiva and three other puppies chained in a locked car left without food or water on a sweltering 96-degree day in New York City. The scenario was heart breaking.

After their rescue, Shiva showed up at the ASPCA underweight and in great need of medical assistance. Her terror was the most urgent concern, even though she was injured on her face and had abrasions on her neck from her collar. Shaking wildly, Shiva was afraid and the staff hurried her to the ASPCA Animal Hospital for quick treatment.

Rescue from Despair

Though she had a terrible past, the committed ASPCA staff was resolved to help her heal. They quickly learned that Shiva took solace among other dogs. Shiva started to improve remarkably with the help of a “helper dog,” a confident dog who was calm and sociable. Excitement drove her tail as her new friend walked up, and she enthusiastically bound about the play yard, gradually shedding her worries.

Shiva was just weeks away from finishing the Behavioral Rehabilitation Center when fate intervened. She was flourishing there. Emili, a woman on a regular veterinary visit, was in the waiting area crying at the recent death of her cherished cat, Rorschach, who had a malignant tumor. Shiva went to Emili, seated at her feet and staring up at her with fresh faith, in that terrible moment. From the terrified puppy they had first saved, this was a big departure. Emili was moved by Shiva’s calm approach and started chatting with the ASPCA personnel. She texted her soft-hearted pit bull enthusiast husband Zac a picture of Shiva.

 Transformation Through Love and Support

Emili answered his questions regarding possible adoptions usually with a strong “no,” but this time she said Shiva was practically ready for adoption. Though surprised, Zac found great enthusiasm at the prospect. A few days later Emili, Zac, and their kids Sawyer and Etta personally visited Shiva. She was quiet around Zac, but she connected with their other dog, Buddha right away. Playing fiercely, the two had a connection that suggested a bright future.

But Darren Young, the ASPCA’s behavioral consultant, advised Shiva—who was still adjusting to new events—that the busy family setting might be overwhelming. Still, he saw how gently the family treated her, which gave him faith they would be the proper fit. Zac and Emili agreed to raise Shiva that Christmas. Her stress from the hectic festive environment first created stomach problems. Knowing that the BRC crew was there to help him gave Zac peace despite his fears.

A New Lease on Life

Always willing to answer questions, Darren guided them through Shiva’s period of transition. Shiva started to exhibit her actual nature gradually, and the family knew they could not handle to let her go. Zac worked assiduously over time to make Shiva comfortable in her new house. She was first withdrawn, then would frequently retire to the quiet basement for comfort.

Knowing this habit, Zac progressively urged her to move upstairs to a more visible area where she could still feel protected and be part of the family. With his vibrant and joyful demeanor, Buddha was instrumental in guiding Shiva out her shell. His will to involve her in playtime made all the difference; it let her forget her worries even for a brief while.

From Stray to Family

Turning around one morning as Zac was getting ready for work, he discovered Shiva standing there, tail wagging for the first time. For both of them, this small deed was enormous and a clue she felt comfortable and happy in her new house. Shiva is today a changed dog. She no longer hides in the basement, terrified puppy; she loves to curl up on laps and participate in family everyday activities.

She has progressed remarkably; from sleeping with her feet tucked under her to spreading peacefully on her back, totally free. She loves family walks, cuddles with the children, and even vehicle trips. As Zac muses over their path, he notes, “Her development is amazing. She jumps about when I go home, as though she is delighted to see me. Seeing her become ever more content makes one very happy. Shiva’s narrative is a lovely reminder of animal survival and the great influence of compassion.

Finding Her Stride

Dogs like Shiva have the chance to first experience love and delight thanks to the ASPCA’s rehabilitation program. Zac captures it exactly: “I don’t want a typical dog. I want a happy dog, and I believe I have one. Now proving that every animal deserves a second chance at happiness, Shiva and Buddha reflect the pure love and tenacity of the pit bull terrier breed.
