One morning, a man on Long Island went to start his car that hadn’t been used in a couple of months. He was shocked when it wouldn’t start.
Since he had been driving it for a long time, he thought something might have broken. He took it to a friend who was a mechanic to get fixed.
When the mechanic looked under the car’s hood, he saw something that shouldn’t have been there!
Shocking Discovery
The mechanic found a huge pile of leaves and sticks that looked like a nest under the hood of the car.
When he looked more closely, he saw six fuzzy babies curled up inside the nest.
That’s what the man and the mechanic found: a cute family of rats decided to live in the car while it was parked for months.
Each baby squirrel was taken out of the car by the Long Island repair, but one was missing. Where was their mother?
The owner of the car thought it would be best to call Karenlynn Stracher, a wildlife saver and rehabilitator in the area, and ask her what they should do.
Stracher told them to keep the babies safe by putting them in a box. After that, she told the car owner to take the box and put it back where the car was parked.
What Stracher told him to do, the man did. He carefully put the cute babies in a shoe box and brought them home. There was nothing left to do but wait.
The man didn’t have to wait long before he saw the mother squirrel quickly drop from a tree and grab her kids.
“She fell right away.” I have never seen a family get back together so quickly!” Stracher said to The Dodo.
The mother felt bad and took her kids one by one to a different nest in a tree nearby. The squirrel mom wouldn’t take a break until all of her kids were safe in their new home.
Stracher took a video of this sweet moment and shared it on her TikTok.
The Perfect Outcome
When Stracher saw this little family get back together, her heart was filled with joy.
She wants people to be more aware of animals in need after reading this sweet story. That this mother dog reacted that way shows that animals have feelings too.
If you see a baby animal in trouble, think of its worried mother and do what you can to get them back together.
“I wish people knew how much these moms want their kids back.” When the babies are healthy, Stracher said, “everything should be done to get them back to their mother because, no matter how good we are at raising baby squirrels, their mother is always best.”
